Death of foreign fisherman in Darwin harbour

Northern Territory Police are conducting investigations into the death of an Indonesian man aboard a foreign fishing vessel in Darwin Harbour this afternoon. The 37 year old man was the Master of an Indonesian vessel which had been apprehended for illegal fishing inside Australian waters on 18 April. The vessel arrived in Darwin Harbour on 21 April. NT police have advised that, at this stage, it appears the death is non-suspicious. A post mortem will be conducted tomorrow. The boat was moored in a special quarantine area within Darwin Harbour which is monitored by caretakers. The boats crew alerted the caretakers to a medical problem with one of the fishermen on-board. The caretakers immediately requested an ambulance but the crewman was unable to be revived. AFMA is conducting an internal review of all circumstances surrounding the incident and is also cooperating fully with all agencies involved.
