AFMA continues to ensure measures are in place to protect Australian sea lions.

AFMA has closed an area of the Australian Sea Lion Management Zone to gillnet fishing after the maximum bycatch of sea lions for the zone was reached.

The closure took effect from 6 February 2012 through Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) Direction No. 1 2012. The closure is being implemented under AFMA’s Australian Sea Lion Management Strategy and will remain in force until 15 May 2013.

Further details of the closure are available on the SESSF Notices and Announcements webpage.

AFMA continues to work with marine mammal experts, other scientists, fisheries and environmental experts and industry to ensure fishing is sustainable.
