Fisheries Policy Review
The Government’s policy statement, “New Directions for Commowealth Fisheries Management in the 1990s” forms the basis of the current key Commonwealth fisheries legislation and establishes and governs the Australian Fisheries Management Authority. This is the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and the Fisheries Administration Act 1991.
This policy statement was reviewed in 2003 “Looking to the Future: A Review of Commonwealth Fisheries Policy” which re-enforced the principals of the 1989 policy statement as well as identifying a new set of strategies to secure the future of Australian fisheries.
