Indigenous Cadetship Program

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) commenced an Indigenous Cadetship Program in March 2003 with the aim to increase the number of professionally qualified indigenous staff within AFMA and their subsequent representation in fisheries management and senior positions.

The program offers financial support to Indigenous students enrolled at university in a course relevant to fisheries management.

In the inaugural year of the program we specifically targeted Torres Strait Islanders with the objective to eventually have a Torres Strait Islander in the Thursday Island Office either as the manager or senior management officer (as per announcement by Senator Ian Macdonald made on 4 July 2002).

What we offer cadets

Cadets receive financial assistance during their studies (approx $12,000 per academic year), 12 weeks paid practical work experience during semester breaks (approx $6,200 per year), additional financial support associated with tertiary education, for fees and books, and some travel assistance throughout the year. We guarantee cadets ongoing employment on graduation.

Cadet requirements

We expect cadets to apply themselves diligently and complete the course in the minimum required time. Cadets must submit a certified copy of their results to AFMA at the end of each academic year. The continuation of the cadetship is dependent on cadets successfully completing all units. A further requirement of the cadetship is to complete 12 weeks paid work experience during each end of year semester break.

Students who accept the offer of a cadetship must complete 12 months employment with AFMA after graduation and may incur a financial liability if they resign during this period.

Our program is run in conjunction with a National Indigenous Cadetship Program sponsored by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
