10 August 2004 - Appointment of the Independent Advisory Panel
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is currently drafting a Plan of Management for the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery. The Plan of Management will make detailed provision for environmental, input and monitoring controls appropriate to part of the Antarctic region and will include provision for the grant of Statutory Fishing Rights (SFRs) in the form of individual transferable quotas for Patagonian toothfish in two management regions: Aurora Trough and outside of Aurora Trough. Consistent with the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Interim Management Policy (the Policy), the AFMA Board has decided to grant 50% of each type of toothfish SFR to the current participant in the Fishery: Austral Fisheries Pty Ltd.

The Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Independent Advisory Panel (IAP) has been appointed to advise the AFMA Board of what percentage, if any, above the minimum 50% guaranteed under the Policy should be granted to Austral Fisheries Pty Ltd. This advice shall be in accordance with AFMA's legislative objectives, and consistent with Commonwealth Government policy.

The Independent Advisory Panel sought written submissions by Tuesday 14 September 2004.
