Northern Prawn Fishery

Results of CSIRO survey

Results of the CSIRO survey carried out from 16 - 27 August 2002 by the Karumba Pearl and the Flinders Pearl.

The attached maps show:

  • the total tiger prawn catch (kg/h) at each site trawled
  • the total endeavour prawn catch (kg/h) at each site trawled
  • the tiger prawn size count (no/lb) at each site trawled
  • the tiger prawn size count (no/lb) at each site trawled

It should be noted that:

  1. the survey completed 169 half-hour trawls between 16th and 27th August
  2. the survey was completed by two NPF vessels using twelve fathom prawn trawl nets
  3. we have not included banana prawn plots as we found very few throughout the survey
  4. the dots on the maps show the mid-point of the 2 nautical mile x 2 nautical mile grid square fished; and
  5. the survey was a random stratified survey and trawls were not necessarily designed to target the areas of highest catch.
