21 December - Advice to Statutory Fishing Right holders - amendments to the Management Plan
As required under the Fisheries Management Act a letter was sent to Statutory Fishing Right (SFR) holders on 21 December 2004, along with the final grant of SFRs, advising them of the amendments to the Management Plan and Regulations.
8 December - Amendments to the Management Plan and Regulations
The proposed amendments to the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery (BSCZSF) Management Plan were circulated for public comment on 28 July 2004. A public notice inviting comments on the draft amendments was placed in the Commonwealth Government Gazette and The Australian newspaper. The closing date for comments was 3 September 2004. Two representations were received from one operator; these were considered by ScallopMAC and the AFMA Board; no changes to the amendments were recommended.

Changes were also made to the Fisheries Management (Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery) Regulations 2002 (PDF 94kb).

In essence, the changes to the Management Plan and Regulations:

  • Allow AFMA the flexibility to change the season dates annually, with default dates of 1 May to 20 December (as is currently the case). Decision rules are required to set alternative dates;
  • Allow AFMA to set the Total Allowable Catch (TAC)annually at an amount determined via decision rules and agreed by ScallopMAC;
  • Increase the minimum size limit from 80mm to 90mm minimum shell length.

The amended Plan and Regulations commenced on gazettal and are in force from 1 December 2004 and 8 December 2004 respectively.

28 July - Call for comments - draft amendments to the Management Plan
AFMA has recently prepared draft amendments to the Management Plan for the Fishery and now invites people with an interest in the Fishery to provide comments.
