Gillnet, Hook and Trap Sectors
At a glance
Whilst the total area of the Scalefish Hook, Shark Hook, Gillnet, Tasmanian Rock Lobster, South Australian Coastal Waters and Tasmanian Coastal Waters Sectors (GHT Sectors) is large, operators are limited to specific areas based on historical fishing methods, as specified on their fishing permits. For more information please refer to the Guide to the 2008 SESSF Management Arrangements Booklet.
About the Sector
The GHT Sectors were created by merging the previously separately managed South East Non-trawl and Southern Shark Fisheries into a single fishery. This approach was triggered by the determination of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) Management Plan (the SESS Management Plan) which sets the foundations for the granting of Statutory Fishing Rights (SFRs).
The Gillnet, Hook and Trap Fishery is now a sector of the SESSF managed under the SESSF Management Plan 2003.

| Principal species: |
30 species/species groups are subject to quota management arrangements in the SESSF (although not all of these can be caught by methods other than trawling) through the setting of Total Allowable Catch (TAC) limits. Twenty (20) of these species will be managed under type N Quota Statutory Fishing Rights (SFRs) in 2005. The four shark species and six additional species will be managed through Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs).
