Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery

Swordfish Catch vs TAC

The AFMA Board has approved monitoring the broadbill swordfish TAC of 1,400 tonnes, on a financial year basis. As such the TAC will now be monitored from 1 July 2007 through to 30 June 2008.

In managing this TAC, trigger limits have been set that apply to the total catch of broadbill swordfish for a specified period of time.  If a trigger limit is reached within a specified period, all operators will be subject to a 10 fish bycatch limit.  The cumulative trigger limits are:

  • July 07 to September 07 – 500 tonnes;
  • October 07 – 600 tonnes;
  • November 07 to December 07 – 700 tonnes;
  • January 08 – 1,100 tonnes;
  • February 08 to April 08 – 1,200 tonnes;
  • May 08 – 1,300 tonnes; and
  • June 08 – 1,400 tonnes

As such, AFMA will publish the catch recorded for broadbill in the fishery on a monthly basis, so operators can remain abreast of the impending triggers.
