The Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery Management Plan 2005 (as amended) (as amended) has now been fully implemented.

The Plan sets out the process for the allocation of Statutory Fishing Rights (SFRs) for stable and secure access to the fishery, and contains management measures to ensure the sustainability of the resource. SFRs were granted to eligible persons in August 2009, with the first season under effort management commencing on 1 November 2009 and running for a 16 month period.

The Plan was accepted by the Minister for Fisheries, Senator Ian Macdonald on 12 October 2005 and came into force on 21 October 2005. One amendment has been made to the plan, which came into effect on 18 September 2007.

Work is currently being undertaken to amend the plan to allow for quota based management to be implemented into the fishery, and is expected to come into effect sometime in 2011.
