Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery

Management of the fishery

The Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery Management Plan 2005 sets out the process for the allocation of Statutory Fishing Rights (SFRs) for stable and secure access to the fishery, and contains management measures to ensure the sustainability of the resource.

The Plan was accepted by the Minister for Fisheries, Senator Ian Macdonald on 12 October 2005 and came into force on 21 October 2005.

The fishery is continuing to be managed by annual fishing permits (through transitional arrangements under the Management Plan) until SFRs are granted (expected to be effective during 2010).
