What is AFMA doing to enable electronic logbooks?

Electronic logbook reporting is an alternative method for reporting catch and effort data.

An electronic logbook will allow fishers to elect to send this data to the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) over the internet or by e-mail, either on return to port or while at sea, in place of paper log sheets.

AFMA is working closely with software vendors who are developing the technology to electronically capture catch data. AFMA provides the software vendors with the standard procedures and specifications for sending electronic catch and effort data to AFMA.

AFMA will only accept electronic catch and effort data that is generated by an application which complies with these procedures and specifications.

It is AFMA’s intention to have electronic logbook reporting fully operational by March 2009. The existing e-Logs pilot trial in the NPF fishery will cease at the end of the current (2008) tiger prawn season.
