Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS)

Costs

Transmission Costs

The payment of transmission costs is the responsibility of the vessel operator.

Payment of certain position tracking costs is made by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) but these are recovered from operators through the levy process. AFMA position tracking costs may vary depending on the circumstances of the fishery or other factors but are usually less than $1 per day.

Equipment Costs

The cost of an Automatic Location Communicator (ALC) depends on its type, quantity purchased and many other business factors. As such there is some fluctuation in prices from time to time. The use of a PC, printer or data terminal attached to the ALC may not be required by AFMA for all VMS applications. However, AFMA recommends that either one be fitted to provide the operator with full communications and safety features
