Bycatch Action Progress reports & Bycatch and Discard Workplans

Bycatch action plans identify the specific bycatch issues in a fishery and detail actions required to address those issues. The bycatch action plan is then integrated into the management arrangements for the fishery to enable the actions to be implemented.

Bycatch action plans are reviewed every two years, in line with Commonwealth policy. Reports on the implementation of bycatch action plans are also provided regularly to the AFMA Environment Committee. Once considered by the Environment Committee implementation reports are included on the AFMA website.

The review of bycatch action plans in 2003 agreed that reports on the implementation of bycatch action plans should be provided regularly in an agreed format. Implementation reports to 31 March 2007 can be found at the bottom of the following table.

AFMA is currently reviewing its bycatch management arrangements to bring together the outputs of the Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) / Ecological Risk Management (ERM) project and the outputs of the Bycatch and Discard project.
