Securing our fishing future – exit assistance tender open

Fisheries Minister Senator Eric Abetz has announced the release of tender documentation for Business Exit Assistance under the Australian Government’s $220 million Securing our Fishing Future initiative.

“The tender provides an opportunity for those wishing to leave the industry to do so, while also better positioning those who remain to be profitable.” Senator Abetz said.

To assist fishers in making these important decisions, the Minister encouraged fishers to take advantage of the $1,500 available per business to secure professional advice on their best options under the tender process.

In addition, Departmental officers will be holding meetings in 14 key ports around Australia from 5 April to 3 May to provide information and answer questions relating to the tender process.

AFMA Darwin office open – fight against illegal fishing enhanced

L to R: Minister for Fisheries Senator Eric Abetz, AFMA Board Chair Tony Rundle, and AFMA Managing Director Richard McLoughlin. The opening of the new AFMA Darwin office last week will provide a major boost to the Australian Government’s efforts to stamp out illegal foreign fishing, Minister for Fisheries Senator Eric Abetz said on Wednesday.

Working out of the office will be 23 dedicated Australian fisheries officers plus support staff. These officers will be embarked on Naval, Customs and Coastwatch patrols to provide valuable fisheries expertise and intelligence on illegal fishing activities and enforcement of Australia’s fisheries laws.

The Darwin office will also oversee the investigation and prosecution of apprehended fishers in the ports of Darwin, Broome, Thursday Island, Perth and Gove, and also the destruction of illegal fishing vessels.

These new resources will provide greater deterrence of illegal fishing by further improving our capacity to apprehend and prosecute illegal fishers.
