Update on SFR grant in the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery

Yellowfin tunaAFMA will advise eligible persons of the number of SFRs available to them in accordance with the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery Management Plan 2005 before the end of March 2007.  There has been delays in the grant of quota statutory fishing rights in the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery as additional evidence has been requested from a number of permit holders who have submitted claims for catch verification and serious misfortune. The closing date for the provision of additional evidence is close of business Friday 16 March 2007.

Further information on the provisional allocation process can be obtained from Peter Neave (Manager, Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery) on (02) 6225 5302.

Understanding the SESSF TACs for 2007/08

The 2007 SESSF TACs were set for a 16 month period as a one-off to move the end of the quota year away from the Christmas – New Year period. This means the 2007 quota year will run from 1 January 2007 until 30 April 2008.

AFMA Management used 12 month TACs to calculate an appropriate 16 month TAC. The additional 4 months of TAC was calculated using the average % of catch taken for each species in January – April over the last 4 years.

The following table shows for each species what the 12 month TAC would have been, the additional 4 months TAC and the total TAC that was determined and allocated to operators at the start of the year. AFMA has also put a 12 month converter on its website to assist operators in determining what their entitlements would have allowed them to catch under a 12 month TAC.
