The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has been recognised for the high quality of its work by being awarded first place in the Comcover Awards for Excellence in Risk Management 2007. Managing compliance with the rules and regulations that govern Australia’s fisheries can be a fraught business, but application of risk management principles has helped make our fisheries sustainable.

The winners were announced during a presentation ceremony in Canberra on 22 November. Paul Murphy, Operations General Manager for AFMA said, “I am very happy to accept this award and I do so on behalf of a large number of people, both government and industry, people who have worked hard throughout this project.” |
“We’ve developed a risk based structure to allocate resources to managing the risks associated with domestic non-compliance across all fisheries and specifically focusing on the ones with the highest risk.”
‘In simple terms, the project asks, “What is the risk to the fishery if people fail to comply?” If the answer is unacceptable to AFMA as the regulator, then we apply resources to mitigate that risk’, said Paul.
The Awards focus on agencies that excel in risk management and acknowledge agencies that have contributed to Government reform, through the use of risk management to inform and guide the successful implementation of Government policy. The Awards also promote the benefits of risk management in achieving agency outcomes.
