E-Logs Update
AFMA’s e-logs program is progressing according to the timetable set by AFMA’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), Mark Farrell. AFMA hopes to have commercial software development companies providing a solution for the majority of AFMA fisheries by January 2009. AFMA will soon (in the next two weeks) release the data ‘schema’ to interested software developers. The schema is the format data should be in when it comes from the e-logs software to AFMA. Developers will then have the opportunity to develop software prototypes that can be tested and certified as AFMA compliant. Once certified and approved by AFMA, developers can then offer their product to the fishing Industry. Some of the key elements of the e-logs program:

Blacktip Gas Project - Eni AustraliaThe company responsible for the Blacktip Gas Project, Eni Australia, has contacted AFMA with advice to commercial fishing operators about constructing of infrastructure associated with their project. Eni Australia will be installing infrastructure for the Blacktip Gas Project between September 2008 and January 2009. The Blacktip Gas Field is located on the WA side of the offshore border between WA and NT, North of Wyndham, WA and West of Wadeye, NT. 'Smart Hook' appears on the ABC's New Inventors programAhi Enterprises Pty Ltd were fortunate enough to have their revolutionary 'Smart Hook' featured on the 20 August episode of the ABC's New Inventors. The 'Smart Hook' took out the weekly prize for best invention and then received the weekly People's Choice Award by popular vote. The 'Smart Hook' was featured in the recent Special Environment Edition of AFMA Update. Northern Prawn Fishery season opensThe 2008 tiger prawn season opened on 1 August. Even with the reduced fleet size of 52 boats, NPF operators will need a very productive season to offset the rapid rise in fuel costs which is impacting severely on the fishing industry in general.
