Play the Great Australian Fisheries Challenge!

Fisheries management can be a complex thing for anyone without a scientific background to understand, but trying to explain the concept of sustainable fisheries management to children in particular can be very challenging.

AFMA has developed an interactive learning tool, called The Great Australian Fisheries Challenge, as a new and fun way to get this concept across.

This game, which is aimed at late primary and early high school students, lets the player learn about managing a marine ecosystem in a sustainable way by assuming the role of a fishery manager.

The player gets to choose what they think is the best way to deal with the issues and challenges that fishing may present, such as any adverse effects on the marine environment, interactions with protected species as well as maintaining fishing at a sustainable level.

The game forms one part of AFMA’s public education strategy for its Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management project, with funding support for the project provided by the Australian Government through the Natural Heritage Trust.
