Great Australian Bight Trawl Fishery co-management trial
From 2009 to 2011, a co-management trial was undertaken with the Great Australian Bight Fishing Industry Association (GABIA).
The trial focused on increasing industry’s role in fisheries management tasks.
Elements of the trial included:
- GABIA making recommendations directly to AFMA concerning operational and commercial matters in the fishery, such as total allowable catch, stock assessments and future research direction
- enhancing fishery data collection
- development of a boat operating procedures manual
The trial has now been completed however GABIA continues to work with AFMA under a co-management arrangement for their fishery. A final report detailing the outcomes of the trial will be released in early 2013.
