Environment and sustainability

AFMA is committed to the conservation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity by promoting the sustainable use of our fisheries resources.

We work with the fishing industry to set catch limits that ensure strong fish stocks and to develop policies and fishery-specific management arrangements that minimise fishers’ impact on the broader marine environment, including wildlife.

We also work closely with the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities to better manage the marine environment and to gain environmental accreditation for our fisheries.

Through this we ensure that our fisheries are sustainably managed, and that consumers can be confident their seafood comes from a sustainable and environmentally friendly source.

We have created a framework to ensure that requirements in relation to the marine environment are met. Throughout the process we seek advice from experts on conservation, commercial and recreational fishing, marine science and fisheries management view points.

While most AFMA activities include marine conservation elements, we also have an Environment Section that deals specifically with environmental issues and helps direct AFMA in world best practice approaches to environmental management.
