Management of the fishery and its sectors
Management Plan 2003
Four major Commonwealth fisheries have come under the ‘umbrella’ of a new statutory management plan developed by AFMA in consultation with stakeholders.
The Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery brings together the South East Trawl, Great Australian Bight Trawl and Gillnet Hook and Trap (formerly the Southern Shark and South East Non-trawl) fisheries under a common set of management objectives.

Management of the East Coast Deepwater sector
In 2004 the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) engaged in consultation on the future management of this sector of the fishery, with consultations and circulation of a Discussion Paper.
Please note, the AFMA Board agreed to implementation of individual transferable quotas (ITQs) for Alfonsino in this Sector of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF). The AFMA Board decided that this would not occur in 2005, but would be pursued through an amendment to the SESSF Plan, with ITQs to come into effect for the 2006 fishing year.
