The Southern Bluefin Tuna Management Plan 1995 (as amended) is in place and was reviewed in 2008 to ensure reflection of current fishing practices and best risk management strategies.

The Australian domestic Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) Fishery is part of the global fishery for SBT which is managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT).  Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Korea and Taiwan are members of the Commission. The Commission sets global total allowable catch of SBT and determines national catch allocations for its members.

The SBT Management Plan 1995 is the instrument through which Australia implements the resolutions of CCSBT in the domestic fishery.
