Harvest Strategy Policy
A Commonwealth Harvest Strategy Policy and Guidelines (PDF, 1.1MB) was developed by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and was released in September 2007. The policy provides guidance on how to manage fish stocks sustainably and profitably through harvest strategies. The Policy is due for review in 2012.
AFMA has developed a number of harvest strategies under this Policy.
Harvest strategies
A harvest strategy sets out the management actions that are needed to achieve defined biological and economic objectives for a single fish stock or group of fish stocks. This includes specifying:
- ‘control rules’ that regulate the level of fishing activity, and
- monitoring and assessment processes to inform both setting and progress of the harvest strategy objectives.
AFMA has 13 harvest strategies that have been implemented in accordance with the Commonwealth Harvest Strategy Policy.
The relevant harvest strategies for each of AFMA’s fisheries are below. Please note, these are the latest versions of the harvest strategies. Some harvest strategies may be under review and subject to change.

Western Deepwater Trawl and North West Slope Trawl Harvest Strategy - Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery
Please note: The Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery uses the same harvest strategy framework as the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery. Due to the low effort and catch however, there was insufficient data in the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery to operate the harvest strategy in the fishery. AFMA is in the process of developing a new tropical tuna harvest strategy that will be able to assess the entire range of effort and catch. The new harvest strategy will also cover catch of by-product species.
