Domestic Compliance and Enforcement Program

2011-12 Domestic Compliance and Enforcement Program

Department of Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) and AFMA fisheries officers return on board a rigid hulled inflatable boat to the PIRSA fisheries patrol vessel Southern Ranger 2011

AFMA has recently finalised the 2011-12 domestic compliance and enforcement program (the Program) under AFMA’s domestic compliance and enforcement policy.

The Program acts as a guide to how AFMA will carry out its compliance operations for 2011-12. AFMA has adopted a risk-based compliance approach that enables AFMA to target compliance and enforcement activity in the areas most needed and therefore most effectively use AFMA’s resources.

The Program includes five priority risk area which will be targeted in 2011-12. These areas are:

  • Vessel monitoring
  • Fishing/navigating in closed areas
  • Quota balancing
  • Interactions with prohibited/protected species
  • Quota avoidance/evasion

In order to treat these risks AFMA has formed dedicated Compliance Risk Management Teams.

In addition to the risk treatment programs, AFMA also maintains a general deterrence/presence component. This will involve inspections and patrols designed to target identified high risk ports, boats and fish receivers.
