Terms of Reference

Commonwealth fisheries research is generally coordinated through the Commonwealth Fisheries Research Advisory Body (ComFRAB).

Goal

The goal of the ComFRAB is to improve the sustainability (ecological, economic and social) and management performance of Commonwealth fisheries through more efficient and effective research and development.

Role

ComFRAB provides the primary planning and entry point for proposals for Commonwealth fisheries research funding. ComFRAB conducts analysis and filters research proposals in order to assess the merit of the proposals and to identify the most appropriate potential funding source. In doing so ComFRAB ensures the highest priority and most efficient research and development is recommended to funding partners.

Funding partners make every endeavour to ensure there is collaborative and coordinated research investment in Commonwealth fisheries.

ComFRAB’s role does not prevent funding partners commissioning and funding research independently. However where possible, funding partners seek advice from ComFRAB prior to commissioning research and advise ComFRAB of relevant research they commission.

The specific role of ComFRAB is to give advice to funding partners and provider agencies on the following, with respect to Commonwealth fisheries research relevant to the information needs and objectives of funding partners:

  • strategic direction
  • priorities, project evaluation and review
  • funding and appropriate funding mix
  • how research is communicated and applied.

This is with a view to improving the sustainability, economic efficiency and management of Commonwealth fisheries.
