Under the Small Pelagic Fishery (Closures) Direction No.1 2015, zone 6 detailed in the Direction, has been closed to mid-water trawling methods for a period of six months from 17 June 2015. This is a result of a common dolphin mortality recorded in zone 6 on 17 June 2015. The closure direction will be in force until midnight on 16 December 2015.
To minimise the likelihood of any interaction with dolphins, on 8 May 2015, AFMA implemented the Small Pelagic Fishery (Closures) Direction No.1 2015 for mid-water trawl fishing methods in the Small Pelagic Fishery to only take place during daylight hours.
All mid-water trawl vessels are required to report the details of any interaction with a listed or protected species to AFMA within 24 hours of the event. AFMA publishes all threatened, endangered and protected species interactions in its fisheries on a quarterly basis on its website.
