Under Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (Closures) Direction No. 1 2017, Australian Sea Lion Management Zone D has been closed to gillnet fishing.

The closure has been implemented under AFMA’s Australian Sea Lion Management Strategy because the trigger limit for moralities of Australian sea lions for that zone has been reached. The closure will remain in force in this zone until midnight 9 March 2019, 18 months from the date of the last Australian sea lion mortality in the zone.

Zone D is located in waters off South Australia, extending from east of Elliston to Sleaford Bay, south west of Port Lincoln, and is part of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery.

Qualifying gillnet concession holders can apply to AFMA for temporary hook permits as an alternative fishing method. This enables boats to keep fishing for target shark species using a fishing method that is safer for Australian sea lions.
