There is much to celebrate about Australian seafood this festive season after a great year for many Commonwealth fisheries, producing an abundant supply of sustainable wild-caught seafood throughout the year.
CEO of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), Wez Norris, said the festive season is the perfect time to enjoy Australian wild-caught seafood.
“With Christmas just around the corner and plenty of time left this summer, why not celebrate with those closest to you over a feast of Aussie seafood?” Mr Norris said.
“Choosing Australian seafood supports sustainable fisheries and many local businesses across our nation, from the commercial fishers, right through to the retailers and fish and chip shop owners.
“There is a range of excellent choices after some great seasons this year, but my favourite is a grilled tuna steak served with a green salad and homemade sweet potato chips.
“Australia has a commercial fishing industry that is proud to supply Australians with delicious, wild-caught seafood year-round sourced from fisheries that are sustainably managed by AFMA.
“This year, we signed a co-management agreement with the South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association which will establish an industry group to provide expert advice on operational aspects of the Commonwealth Trawl Sector to better inform fisheries management decisions.
“A new bycatch reduction device, called Tom’s fisheye, designed and built by the industry and which showed a 40 per cent decrease in bycatch in trials, was added to a suite of effective devices in the Northern Prawn Fishery.
“AFMA Officers have represented Australia in multi-national patrols and operations to monitor waters right around Australia and into the Pacific to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
“Strategies to mitigate interactions with dolphins in the gillnet and Small Pelagic Fishery were reviewed and revised to ensure they continue to deliver protection for dolphins in the most efficient and effective manner.
“To celebrate these great achievements, I encourage all Australians to add some fresh, local, delicious and sustainable seafood to your Christmas menu, and support a proud Australian industry.”
