Following over two months of fishing, the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) banana prawn season concluded on 15 June.

As expected, given the poor wet in many parts of Northern Australia, the total catch of banana prawns is down compared to recent  years, however there have been strong catches of red leg banana and tiger prawns during the season.

Annie Jarrett, CEO of NPF Industry Pty Ltd, said that the lower catches of banana prawns in the Gulf of Carpentaria are in line with industry expectations.

Fishing will re-commence on 1 August where boats will be mainly targeting tiger prawns.
