The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is the Commission responsible for the efficient management and sustainable use of Commonwealth fish resources on behalf of the Australian community.

4 August 2010 - Trial of e-monitoring to help protect sea lions

AFMA has received $288,000 in funding to support monitoring of Australian Sea Lion interactions in the gillnet sector of the Southern and Eastern Shark and Scalefish Fishery. The funding, provided by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on behalf of the Commonwealth Government, will allow AFMA to undertake a 12 month trial of electronic monitoring, commencing in August 2010. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority has finalised the Australian Sea Lion Management Strategy. The strategy will significantly reduce the impact of fishing in the Southern and Eastern Scalefishand Shark Fishery on Australian sea lions and enable the recovery of the species, including all sub populations.
