This is a joint media release from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) and the Australian Border Force (ABF).Nineteen Indonesian nationals have pleaded guilty to illegally fishing in Australian waters at Darwin Local Court on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The charges follow apprehension of three foreign fishing vessels by ABF, through Maritime Border Command (MBC), between 19 and 21 May 2026.

Since 2016, 31 fish aggregating devices (FADs) were retrieved off the Australian coast, in a collaborative effort by the Maritime Border Command (MBC), Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) Fisheries Officers based on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait have conducted a joint operation with Water Police Thursday Island (WPTI) focusing on marine safety and fisheries compliance within the Torres Strait through proactive engagement.
